They typically offer the most efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens since they consume less energy. They can also be used to cook food and warm food items. This reduces the need for other appliances like toasters or warming plates.

DOE conducts various analyses when evaluating the possibility of amending energy conservation standards. These include technology and market assessments, screening analyses, engineering analyses, and a national impact analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its existing engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the highest level of efficiency improvements that are technologically feasible for this product class.

DOE will compare the design of a microwave to an energy performance objective that is specified in the engineering analysis. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the effects on consumers for every product category including lifecycle cost savings and simple payback time ("PBP"). DOE will use the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for ovens that can be microwaved, to calculate the industry's net present value (NPV).

The impact of manufacturers will be assessed also as the impact on manufacturers will be evaluated. DOE will employ a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model that has been modified for this type of product to estimate manufacturing NPV. DOE will also look at the impacts of these plans on small-scale businesses as well as other manufacturing subgroups to determine those that may be disproportionately affected.

Additionally, DOE will consider whether the tests for microwave ovens must be revised to include active mode energy use and a possible integrated active mode energy use metric. The current tests only provide standby mode power usage.

Design

Microwaves produce heat by causing water molecules to vibrate in food. Wall ovens are based on the circulation of hot air while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens combine two different appliances into one unit that can be used to save kitchen space and provides an elegant, modern look. It is important to consider your budget and goals before purchasing a combination wall oven. Many of the combination wall ovens we have rated have issues with performance or design.
